bp joins H2Accelerate collaboration to enable the scale up of low carbon hydrogen as a fuel for the heavy-duty vehicle sector

With an ambition to become a net zero company by 2050, or sooner, bp aims to invest in building infrastructure to support freight transport across major road networks in mainland Europe and the UK by 2030 to meet the needs of customers. bp's hydrogen mobility ambitions are aligned with those of the H2Accelerate collaboration, whose members are working towards the deployment of the hydrogen refuelling network required to support a pan-European hydrogen trucking system.

bp has been welcomed to the collaboration as a key future infrastructure provider for heavy-duty hydrogen vehicles. bp will support efforts to develop a hydrogen refuelling infrastructure and advocate for the policies needed to rapidly upscale the European hydrogen freight ecosystem.

Hannah Bryson-Jones, Spokesperson for H2Accelerate, said of bp joining the collaboration:

"bp has extensive experience and expertise across the deployment of hydrogen production and refuelling technologies. Combining that expertise with other hydrogen refuelling players and truck manufacturers, through the H2Accelerate collaboration, we can work together to accelerate the dawn of hydrogen trucking. We are very excited for bp to be joining the collaboration as we shape the transformation towards sustainable transportation."

Emma Delaney EVP, Customers & Product said of bp said:

“bp is transitioning from a International Oil Company to an Integrated Energy company and having a key role in mobility. Hydrogen will be a key energy for heavy duty transport supporting carbon emissions reduction. To deliver this at both scale and pace will need companies across industries to work together, and this is exactly why we see collaborations like H2Accelerate as so valuable.”

About bp

bp is aiming to be a net zero company by 2050 or sooner and in support of this, bp is determined to advance the hydrogen industry. Hydrogen is set to provide lower carbon energy for activities and processes that are difficult to electrify – especially in industry: iron, steel and chemicals for high-temperature processes while also for long-distance transportation in marine, aviation and heavy-duty road transport. By working across a number of our businesses, we intend to provide customers the use of – and access to – hydrogen along main road networks.

About H2Accelerate

H2Accelerate is a collaboration agreement signed between the participants under which the participants will work together to:

  • seek public support to fund early pre-commercial projects to activate the market on the path towards a mass market roll-out;
  • communicate around the technical and commercial viability of hydrogen fuelled trucking at scale; and
  • hold discussions with policy makers and regulators to encourage policies which can support a sustainable and speedy activation of the zero emissions long haul trucking market.
